NFU's Buis: Johanns resignation poorly timed

With praise being heaped upon him from both sides of the political aisle, it seems most in ag policy are now looking back on Mike Johanns' tenure as ag secretary with rose-colored glasses.

National Farmers Union (NFU) president Tom Buis is pleased with Johanns' work as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, according to an NFU release. "During Secretary Johanns' tenure at the department he has shown an openness and willingness to travel to the countryside and listen to those who live, work and raise their families in rural America. I give him a lot of credit for that," Buis said in a Thursday statement. "While we didn't always agree on the issues, he was an active participant in the process."

But, Buis' praise ends there. Buis is one of a few in ag policy circles who are questioning the timing of Johanns' resignation. Coming before the 2007 farm bill is etched in stone, Buis said the changing of the guard at USDA comes at a bad time.

"I do think it is unfortunate that the secretary chose to leave USDA when Congress has yet to complete work on a new farm bill," he said.

Looking ahead, however, Buis said he sees Johanns' successor -- Deputy USDA Secretary Chuck Conner -- as well-qualified to lead the agency's work toward the signing of the farm bill later this year.

"Acting Secretary Chuck Conner has a wealth of experience and understanding of the intricacies of farm policy," Buis said. "He has been an active participant in crafting farm legislation in the past and I look forward to working with him in the future."
