Research shows you will be more satisfied and successful in careers that are the right fit for who you are as a person. I can't speak for all careers, but I can't imagine a business vocation/profession other than farming with more members who are both God-gifted and called to their life's work. Farmers love farming with a passion.
Profit in farming begins with the knowledge and application of production and business skills. But both the profit and the satisfaction in farming are enhanced when farmers develop their people skills and are good builders of relationships inside and outside the family, too.
The lineup of speakers included both younger farmers and those with considerable experience in building long-term relationships, particularly with all types of landowners. The message really boiled down to this: Be the person you yourself want to do business with.
A related message stood out as well: Continually expand your network of friends. The network should include friends far from home as well as in your own community. It should include people outside the industry of agriculture as well as inside. Friendships greatly expand your ability to learn new ideas and to hear of new opportunities.
Here's another message that shouldn't be surprising: Character matters. Your good reputation helps create opportunities.
Finally, nurture communications and good relationships with all members involved in your extended farm family business. The effort can certainly make the experience of family farming more enjoyable, profitable and sustainable.
