Communication, hard work, and excellent records are the building blocks of Rachel Fishback's family farm in eastern Iowa. Rachel and her husband, Nathan, farm family ground and do custom work for other family members. "A good line of communication is always important," she says.
From this firm foundation, the Fishbacks have been able to raise their kids the same way they were raised. Farming has always been in the couple's lives, as both sets of parents raised livestock and grew row crops. Rachel and Nathan knew farming was the right career choice for them and their family.
"My kids love farming," Rachel says. "The hard part is when they cry because they can't stay out all day and all evening working with their dad."
In the future, Rachel believes her children could face challenges with financing and getting into the business. Rachel and Nathan started out renting equipment and saved enough to buy their own planter.
"If you don't have the full luxury of having someone to pair up with, farming can be very difficult and daunting," she says.
