It’s the season of graduations, caps and gowns, and diplomas.
Judging by the growth in agriculture over the past few years, the sky is the limit for the Class of 2013, as graduates leave their colleges, trade schools, and high schools. Yes, ag is hot!
Some statistics to mull over Agriculture is a growth industry. The global population will rocket to 9 billion people by 2050. Here are a few other ag-related growing areas to note.
Food production will need to grow by 70% in order to feed our planet.
The number of agriculture and related disciplines are at all-time highs at several land-grant universities.
In 2011, the number of job postings increased by 43,000 on AgCareers.com.
The skills these candidates need are changing, as well. The growth areas are in plant breeding, biotechnology, logistics, and IT.
One human resource director reports that the combination of skills is where the highest demand is. For example, combining biology and information technologies; combining science and business smarts; and combining science and marketing/communication.
Sounds like the skill set of today’s farmer -- as well as tomorrow’s producer -- doesn’t it?
