Here are eight ways to forestall herbicide-resistant weeds from surfacing in your fields.
Skyrocketing grain prices are swell, but cushion yourself in case matters change.
strobilurin fungicides are labeled for application on corn at around the V5 or
V6 stage. A 2010 University of Illinois trial examining several application
stages found the best response occurred when plant disease is present, says
Carl Bradley, University of Illinois (U of I) Extension plant pathologist.
2010, the U of I initiated trials examining several strobilurin fungicide times
at two sites:
V5 (Fifth leaf, tassel initiation stage)
fungicides added around tasseling time have done an excellent job in curbing
southern corn rust in Illinois.
“If we see southern rust moving up to
Illinois around the Fourth of July, that is when we begin getting concerned
about it,” says Carl Bradley, University of Illinois (U of I) Extension plant
pathologist. “In 2009, it showed up early and caused yield losses at Dixon
Springs (where the U of I has a testing site) in southeastern Illinois.
University of Illinois (U of I) trials in 2010
found the most profitable use of strobilurin fungicides occurred when
application was based on:
* Disease risk, such as hybrids susceptible to
disease or hybrids planted in corn-on-corn situations with reduced tillage.
* Scouting that shows disease is present on the
third leaf below the ear or higher on at least 50% of plants prior to tasseling.
leaf spot is a disease that’s increasingly becoming a problem in soybean fields
in states like Illinois. Your first step in fighting this fungal disease is to
plant frogeye leaf spot resistant varieties, says Carl Bradley, University of
Illinois (U of I) Extension plant
