Agronomy Tip: How Tires Affect Soil Structure

Brad Harris, Manager of Global Agricultural Field Engineering at Firestone Ag, says that what inflation pressure is in the tire, the ground experiences at a 10% increase.

“From an agronomic standpoint, in fibrous root structures like a corn or wheat, anything over about 15 PSI may lead to root development or root growth problems,” Harris explains. “So, as we're looking at our tractors, evaluate the tires and put the wheels on to carry the load so that we can reduce the inflation pressure.”

Harris recommends running a load inflation calculator to determine the lowest inflation pressure possible to carry the load while avoiding unnecessary soil compaction.
