Agronomy Tip: Plan Strategically for Hybrid Varieties

When faced with northern corn leaf blight or other diseases of corn, it’s important to evaluate your hybrid variety choices.

Paul Kassel, Field Agronomist with Iowa State University says, “I know it’s difficult and there is a lot to consider when you look at all the insect traits, herbicide traits, yields and maturity, but get out a piece of paper and write down your priorities, like if you have a corn leaf disease concern, and make sure that the hybrids you're planting are at least better than average for those diseases.”

He continues, “If you have a hybrid you already like, you could start to bargain shop the fungicide - sometimes there’s a pretty good reward for prepaying. Maybe not in the product, but the application. It isn’t too early to look ahead.”
