Agronomy Tip: Create a Crop Scouting Tool Kit

If you plan to spend time scouting your fields, be sure to take along the following items for your comfort and efficiency, recommended by Brian Lang with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

  1. Aluminum foil and plastic zip-top bags to collect plant disease samples
  2. Vials or small containers to collect insects and send to extension office for identification
  3. Square foot measure
  4. Tape measure (in a bright color – you would be surprised what you can lose in a field!)
  5. Magnifying glass
  6. 20x microscope with smartphone adapter clip (and LED light)
  7. Insect net to cover your head
  8. Hat to keep your ears covered
  9. Tool, tackle, or ammo box to house the kit
