Growing Organic Barley for Beer

Barley farmers who want to transition their conventional fields to growing organic can contact the organic beer Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold about a contract. Michelob ULTRA will purchase the transitional barley at a premium price.

The process of transitioning to organic is full of high costs and risks, says the company, but a new initiative will help farmers through the transition process. In a statement, Michelob says the program will be impactful for independent farmers as they face challenges such as demand to grow more organic crops + growing consumer demand + high cost to convertconventional fields.

"This initiative being led through the country’s leading brewer will surely have significant impact on the organic farming industry," says Michelob.

The demand for organic food is spiking [According to the Organic Trade Association, in 2018, the U.S. sales reached $47.9 billion, an increase of 5.9%.], and with the success of Pure Gold, Michelob ULTRA wants to help make organic ingredients more accessible to all.

Pure Gold will share the news at Anheuser-Busch’s Grower’s Days, an annual celebration of the 1,000 farmers who work with the company. Grower’s Day is taking place in Minnesota and Idaho on July 11 and 15.
