5 New Products From World Dairy Expo 2019
The 2019 World Dairy Expo is certainly the place to be for all things dairy. With more than 62,000 visitors descending on Madison, Wisconsin, during the first week of October, it is a busy place to navigate around the 859 companies exhibiting. Exhibit space was sold out again this year, and officials say 97 new companies called Madison home for the week.
Here are five items that caught the eye of visitors.
While activity monitoring systems are not new to the dairy industry, Nedap unveiled an entirely new way of putting real-time farm data at a producer’s fingertips. In essence, it seamlessly brings activity monitoring data to the producer. Using the Microsoft Hololens mixed-reality goggles, information on a cow is displayed above the user’s field of vision. With simple hand gestures, various information can be displayed, including heat and health information, pregnancy status, and reproduction insights. Looking for a specific cow in the barn? The augmented reality display can lead the wearer to that cow.
“The Nedap Augmented Reality is the most practical way to get vital information to the producer,” says Roxie Muller, Innovation Manager for Nedap.
The company is in final stages of testing, and is expected to have the products commercially available within two years.
The DeLaval teat spray robot TSR automates pre- and post-teat spray application. With a capacity of up to 7 seconds per cow (or 514 cows per hour), the TSR provides consistent and accurate application for applying teat spray before and after milking, maintaining cow health while reducing labor and improving cash flow. The DeLaval InSight camera technology on a robotic arm accurately locates and sprays each cow’s teats helping reduce the risk of infection. TSR sprays teats the exact same way each time. It enhances teat health and helps ensure the production of clean, high-quality milk by spraying the right amount of teat spray on every teat, every time.
Designed to give dairies with 500 cows or less the same benefits of a traditional sand-manure separation system, the SMS12 uses the same sand-manure separation equipment system from other McLanahan products. It is designed for dairies that want to remove bedding sand from their manure. These farms may want to recycle the sand for bedding, or they may need a sand-free manure effluent capable of being pumped to a digester, irrigation system, or nutrient separation system. Money is saved by recycling sand. Recycled sand contains minimal organic matter and can be reused. And because the manure effluent contains only the finest sand, wear is reduced on manure handling equipment. With the majority of sand removed, the effluent can be discharged to earthen lagoons or anaerobic digesters.
IMV Imaging introduces its latest wireless bovine ultrasound, the Easi-Scan:Go Curve. It provides increased mobility and better viewing. It is specifically designed for bovine veterinarians checking for late pregnancies. The Easi-Scan:Go is a wireless, App-based scanner that can present the ultrasound image on up to three devices simultaneously. With the IMV Cloud, producers have instant access to vital data, and record data for future use. The BUG-OLED:Go is the first wireless ultrasound goggle that provides complete mobility and allows users to view ultrasound images in front of their eyes, without wires.
Dairyland Seed introduced its next generation of hybrid alfalfa, HybriForce-4400. “Combined data from internal and third-party trials over four years show HybriForce-4400 delivered a 5% yield advantage over our third-generation hybrid alfalfa seed,” says Sara Hendrickson, forage leader, Dairyland Seed. Over the past two years HybriForce-4400 performance was evaluated in 108 Dairyland Seed on-farm HAY (Hybrid Alfalfa Yield) side-by-side comparisons across nine states, according to the company. Results from those trials showed it delivered an average yield advantage of 12.6% against competitive alfalfas, across all cuts at all locations. Dairyland Seed introduced the world’s first hybrid alfalfa, HybriForce-400, in 2001.
