Kubota Releases RTV-XG850 Sidekick UTV

Kubota, a respected leader in the diesel UTV market is expanding to offer a gas model. The new RTV-XG850 Sidekick was on display at National Farm Machinery Show and is the fastest vehicle in Kubota’s portfolio, ready to take on work around the farm or in the backwoods.

“We started a journey to launch this about three years ago. We did a survey with our dealers and they wanted us to build a vehicle that, that would go a little bit faster and a had more accessories and attachments with it,” explains Rajesh Joshi, Kubota director of product marketing, Turf/RTV. “The reason we developed this as a lot of the farmers and our customers, they have multiple farms and they needed a vehicle that could go a little bit faster between the farms.”

Ready to Work

The new Sidekick’s 48-hp. gas engine helps farmers and ranchers get work done fast with a top speed of 40 mph. That’s at least 10 mph faster than other models Kubota produces.

“Customers can confidently take on any task or terrain with comfortable, convenient and capable features, and with the speed to get there fast,” says Roger Gifford, Kubota product manager, utility vehicles.

It’s steel cargo box can carry up to 15.2 cubic feet, or 1,000 lbs. of feed, tools, or building materials. The Line-X coated bed features 4 tie-down points, making it easy to secure loads. An optional hydraulic lift makes the dump feature easier to use. Several easy to install storage options are also available.

Small boats or trailers can be towed behind the UTV with its standard trailer hitch. Loads up to 2,000 lbs. can be towed on level terrain, while capacity is reduced to 1,550 lbs. on inclines.

All models come with ATV tires, but other selections are available as options. “What an ATV tire does is when you're in with softer terrain, it's very much like an ag bar tire. It actually pushes the material out so you get the traction to drive with it,” says Gifford. “It really designed more for off-road. If you put them on gravel surface or hard surface, they’ll wear real quick.”

Mechanical Specifications

The vehicle features a Continuously Variable Transmission with Centrifugal Clutch, and a water-cooled engine for the appropriate amount of torque to ensure a quick and smooth take-off.

To ensure stable power for any situation, the UTV is equipped with Idle Speed Control.

Speed-sensitive Electronic Power Steering offers easy handling at any speed. Front and rear suspension ensures a smooth ride. Urethane bushings throughout the suspension improve durability. The engine-assisted breaking of the Sidekick makes the vehicle safer for operators of all experience levels, especially during descents.

A selectable 4-wheel drive system gives the driver proper traction and control on a variety of train, even when fully loaded. The Sidekick was designed a little wider than previous models to increase stability, especially while towing.

User Friendly

The digital panel makes it easy to see speed, operation hours, fuel level, and more. The fuel tank capacity is 7 gallons.

An adjustable tilt steering wheel and shift knob give the vehicle a similar feel to operating a car or truck. “We went up into our steering assembly and introduced an automotive style steering. The steering is what we call speed sensitive, so it's an EPS system,” says Gifford. “At low speeds, there's more amperage going into the motor to allow for easier steering. But, as you head up into higher speeds, the amperage is actually backed off and becomes more manual steering so you have better feel and control.”

In the driver’s station, a DC outlet makes it easy to charge phones, tablets, and more while out and about. Along with the cargo bed, a glove box, cup holders, and under seat spaces provide easy to access storage options for tools and other essentials. The split bench seats provide a comfortable all-day riding experience for both the driver and passenger.

Bright LED headlights come standard and make the Kubota Sidekick safer to drive at night. Customers can add another set of LED lights as an option.

In addition to the standard features, options like an audio system, additional lights, and a bed extender are available. Many accessories, such as the cargo boxes are easily installed with quick clamps and an Allan’s wrench. In total, 55 new accessories were released with this line of UTVs. The Sidekick is now sold in the traditional Kubota Orange, RealTree ®AP Camo, green, or black, adding two new options to previous color choices.
