Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks for 2018

No significant engineering changes were made to the fleet of 2018 heavy-duty trucks coming out of Detroit. That doesn’t mean the designers at Chevy, GMC, Ram, and Ford haven’t been busy tweaking their midsize models for this marketing season.

New for Chevy’s Silverado and GMC’s Sierra is the addition of a rear-vision camera as standard equipment. Joining that tweak is a tire-pressure monitor system that includes a tire-fill alert and a MyLink 7-inch radio system, which is standard equipment on all base models.

Both the Silverado and Sierra were given a new pallet of exterior colors. GMC’s Denali is being offered exclusively as a crew cab. Also new on both makes is an automatic locking rear differential that reacts in milliseconds in low-traction situations to improve traction on wet, snowy, or muddy surfaces.

Ram’s heavy-duties get a new turbo

The Cummins 6.7-liter diesel on Ram’s heavy-duty versions is engineered with higher boost limits via a variable geometry turbocharger and higher flow rates. This combination results in the generation of 30 additional foot-pounds of torque, allowing the Ram to turn out 930 total pounds of torque. Also, Ram engineering created a new optional hitch design that allows for 30,000 pounds of fifth-wheel towing.

Following suit with other manufacturers, Ram is providing for better rear viewing with the addition of a backup camera as standard equipment.

Ford boosts Power Stroke horsepower

Ford engineers also made power adjustments to the F-series Super Duty engines by redesigning cylinder heads for added strength and optimizing fuel and turbo charge boost calibrations to allow the Power Stroke diesel to turn out 10 more horsepower.

The 450-hp. (935 foot-pounds of torque) engine boasts a best-in-class 34,000 pounds of gooseneck towing (21,000-pound conventional towing) when properly equipped.

Other improvements to the Super Duty Limited line include a high-definition 360° camera with the company’s Trailer Reverse Guidance system. Limited models now also offer adaptive cruise control and steering.
