$1.99 App Identifies Irrigation Pumps That Cost You $$$$$
What’s the fastest way to eat through fuel during irrigation? By having an underperforming pump that needs to be adjusted, repaired or replaced.
For just $1.99 you can buy an online app that calculates pumping plant performance. Developed by Thomas Dorn, Derrel Martin and William Kranz of the University of Nebraska, the UNL A10001 app employs existing records to help determine if a pumping plant should be tested by a professional.
Past University of Nebraska surveys have show many pumps used 30 to 50% more energy than expected by the Nebraska Pumping Plant Performance (NPC) criteria. Surveys of relatively new pumping plants indicate they’re operating at 82% to 92% of NPC. The NPC is based on field tests of pumping plants, lab tests of engines, and manufacturer data on three-phase electric motors.
The easy-to-use app guides users to input six numbers related to pumping lift, pressure at the discharge, acre-inches of water pumped, fuel price, and total fuel used. The app then calculates a pumping plant performance rating. It also provides an estimated cost to bring the pumping plant up to standard and the number of years necessary to pay back the investment at various interest rates.
And this calculator compares the fuel used for your pumping plant with the NPC.
