Hey Engine Man - Does My Diesel Fuel Need a Fungicide?
Successful Farming Engine Man Ray Bohacz has engine grease and field dirt under his fingernails from a life spent repairing vehicles and running a farm. When he's not busy in the shop, he's working on maintenance articles and videos for Successful Farming magazine and answering questions from readers. The following is a letter Bohacz received from John Spors:
Hey, Ray . . .
Does FPPF Total Power (fuel additive) take care of fungus caused by using the 5% biodiesel fuel in storage? My fuel supplier tells me I do not need to add any additives, except maybe a fungus treament in the tank.
Response from the Engine Man:
Thanks so much for reading my article and contacting me. FPPF Total Power works very well with B-5. The product helps to remove moisture and thus limits and keeps at bay fungi. But the additive is not a fungicide. That company does offer an excellent fungicide product that can be used once a year or so in your fuel storage tank. From what I know about your fuel supplier (Cenex), it produces an excellent premium diesel fuel. I was asked almost the same question by a Successful Farming magazine reader about a year ago. But when I did a little research on their fuel, I discovered that while they provide an excellent product, it could be made better with the addition of an additive such as Total Power when delivered to your farm.
