John Deere Gator RSX 850i

Last year, we traveled to Little Goose Ranch in Big Horn, Wyoming. The working ranch, complete with horses, cattle, and 4,000 acres of flat fields, rolling rangeland, and narrow mountain pathways, was the perfect place for our Ultimate UTV Evaluation. The John Deere Gator RSX 850i, pictured at left, proved to be the racehorse of the evaluation.

  • water

Little Goose Creek, which runs through Little Goose Ranch, gave us the opportunity to test the machines in water.

  • seats

When you are driving a high-speed machine, like the RSX, you want to feel safe and secure. The Gator accomplishes this with high-back bucket seats. “The seats provided the necessary side-to-side and back support while driving more aggressively,” says John Lumkes, ag engineering professor at Purdue University.

  • suspension

“The John Deere RSX features several high-performance suspension options, including cast aluminum for the upper arms, which reduces unsprung mass and allows the tire contact to be maintained better during aggressive driving and over rough terrain,” says Lumkes. “And FOX shocks, a performance brand that is tuned for sport and is more adjustable.”

  • dash

The RSX dash displays key machine functions, such as speed, RPMs, and a fuel gauge.

  • 4wd

Using the front differential rocker switch, you can choose between
two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive unlocked, and four-wheel drive locked.
