Watch Corn Carry, Successful Marketing Newsletter Says

April’s grain markets focus on weather, planting, and trade news.

Farmers who are deciding on a grain marketing plan as spring planting arrives may want to pay attention to the CME Group’s corn carry, according to this week’s Successful Marketing newsletter.

The carry from December 2019 to July 2020 continues to widen out. Last week, July 2020 corn futures hit $4.20½ per bushel.

The spread or carry from the December 2019 to July 2020 futures contracts hit 28¢ recently. On March 26, 2018, this spread was 17¢ per bushel.

The USDA Prospective Acreage report caused the spread to widen 11¢ per bushel. If storing corn is part of your marketing plan, then watching this spread should be a very important component to maximizing those grain bins.
