In tonight's Evening Edition, read about the climate agenda and midterms, record-high farm exports, and avian influenza in Iowa and Mississippi.

Agriculture and the Midterms

Republican lawmakers, who have chafed and balked at President Biden’s climate initiatives for months, would likely use their expanded strength from the midterm elections to hobble the administration’s climate agenda for agriculture.

Two members of the House Appropriations subcommittee on agriculture already have hinted at a crackdown on USDA’s spending powers.

Farm Exports

Boosted by large increases in most sales categories, U.S. farm exports mushroomed to a record $196.4 billion in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, according to newly released Commerce Department data.

Sales were 14% higher than the previous mark of $172.7 billion, set one year ago in fiscal 2021.

Find out what USDA has forecasted for exports in the next fiscal year.

Avian Influenza

USDA has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial breeder chicken flock in Lawrence County, Mississippi; Louisa County, Iowa; and Wright County, Iowa.

“Migration is expected to continue for several more weeks, and whether you have backyard birds or a commercial poultry farm, bolstering your biosecurity continues to be the best way to protect your flock from this disease,” says Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig.
