In tonight's Evening Edition, read the latest rail shutdown news, drought in Colorado and Iowa, and new hay mowers coming to market.
Biden administration officials, racing to avert a potential rail shutdown that could disrupt cargo shipments and impede food and fuel supplies, hosted labor contract talks on Wednesday as one of the smaller unions involved in the dispute rejected a deal.
Railroads including Union Pacific, Berkshire Hathaway's BNSF, and Norfolk Southern have until a minute after midnight on Friday to reach tentative deals with three holdout unions representing about 60,000 workers before a work stoppage affecting freight and Amtrak passenger rail service could begin.
A union representing about 4,900 machinists, mechanics and maintenance personnel said on Wednesday its members voted to reject a tentative deal.
Drought in Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado
A small sliver of Woodbury County recently regressed into “exceptional” drought status, the worst classification of dryness identified by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
It’s the first time that any part of Iowa has had exceptional drought since 2013, according to Drought Monitor data.
In Nebraska, where the arid conditions are far worse, exceptional drought developed at the beginning of August and now covers about 10% of the state.
Editor Natalina Sents Bausch reports on drought across Colorado this season.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the state is one of four top corn growing states suffering from D4 drought.
Record breaking temperatures and a stark cool down have challenged crops and livestock in the state this month.
Temperatures above 105° F. have been reported in the eastern half of the region over the last two weeks. Much of the state has not seen measurable rain this month.
