This Week: Soil and Water Conservation Week Celebrated April 29 to May 6
Government groups and industry organizations around the country are encouraging farmers to participate in celebrations of Soil and Water Conservation Week from April 29 to May 6, 2018.
“Soil and Water Conservation Week is an opportunity to celebrate the progress that has been made and renew our commitment to working together to do even more to protect our state’s soil and water,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said on Monday.
Farmers can share their current conservation efforts on social media. They are encouraged to learn more about practices like cover crops, buffers or tillage practices that might be a good fit for their operation.

Facebook: Farmer Derek Releases ‘Ranchin’ In My Van’ Parody
Kansas farmer Derek Klingenberg recently released his newest parody video, ‘Ranchin’ In My Van.’ The creative version of Camila Cabello’s hit tune Havana has nearly 10,000 views on YouTube and has spread through ag groups on Facebook on Twitter. Like Klingenberg’s Facebook page to be the first to learn about his next video.
Twitter: One Step at a Time
Tim May and his family have a dairy farm in Ontario, Canada. After a gentle conversation about how limited mobility is going to impact his dad’s work on the farm this spring, he discovered his dad just added a step to the tractor. May’s tweet explaining his father’s solution received love from around North America as nearly 450 people retweeted the post.
“That man is my hero!” replied one fan.
“We did this for my grandpa too! And by “we” I mean – he did it for himself…,” said another famer.
After questions about the open station tractor May replied, “He built a step on cab tractor too but hates a cab. He keeps the windows wide open and shuts the radio off. Hates the AC too. He likes to hear the engine work and if the equipment has problems.”
