Wildfires Destroy Oklahoma Sow Farm

Wildfires destroyed the Plum Thicket sow farm, owned by Smithfield Foods, near LaVerne, Oklahoma, on March 7, 2017. While Smithfield operations in the state of Oklahoma include 45,000 sows over multiple farm sites, this fire affected only one farm with 6,350 sows. Of those, approximately 4,300 were lost.

There are no reports of injuries to employees.

Plum Thicket was a high-performing sow farm that supplied breeding stock to other Smithfield sites in the U.S..

Fires continue to burn in the region.
