Tractor of the Year Announced at Agritechnica 2017
For the sixth consecutive year, tractor manufacturers from around the world gathered at Agritechnica in Hanover, Germany, to learn which of their products would be crowned Tractor of the Year. The award, which is judged and presented by a group of independent ag machinery journalists representing 23 European countries, was established in 1998. The presentation of the Tractor of the Year award, which is presented annually, alternates between Agritechnica and the EIMA fair in Italy.
This year, 22 tractors representing 15 brands competed. The process began in May 2017 and included an intense testing season as well as scrutiny from 24 judges.
“Tractor of the Year is truly the Oscar of agriculture,” says Richard Markwell, president of CEMA. “Even in tough times, we are seeing companies invest in research and development to increase innovation. The awards we are about to present are proof and feedback that we are on the right track.”
The competition also included three additional categories for Best Design, Best of Specialized, and Best Utility.
And the winners are. . .
There were 15 tractors vying for this award, which is meant to recognize the most beautiful tractor in this competition. Competing brands included McCormick, John Deere, Aebi, Case IH, New Holland, Kubota, Claas, Massey Ferguson, Fendt, and Valtra.
The Valtra Versu T 254 Smart Touch received the Best Design award.
The judges said, “This is a modern, elegant, fancy, and cool-looking tractor.”
Best of Specialized
Finalists include the Aebi TT281, Claas Nexos 240 VE, Fendt 211 Vario V, Kubota M 5101 N, and Massey Ferguson 3710 S.

The 2018 Tractor of the Year Award went to Valtra T 255 Versu Smart Touch.
The judges said, “Due to a new standard and intuitive operation, the tractor, in general, offers a high level of comfort, performance, efficiency, and versatility. The standard 9-inch touch screen, the intelligent multiuse drive lever, and the new hydraulic joystick give the best and most straightforward user interface in the industry, which allows the driver to adjust and control almost any setting.”
“All of these machines are concrete proof of our industry’s contribution to high productivity and sustainable farming, in pushing the boundaries in digital agriculture and precision farming, and of Europe’s technology lead in advanced farming equipment,” says Markwell. “Our proud industry salutes all of the winners here today.”
