Iowa AgriTech Accelerator Accepting Applications

The Iowa AgriTech Accelerator is looking for six early-stage companies with an idea, intellectual property, or prototype focused on ag innovation to participate in its 2017 class.

“An accelerator’s core purpose is to find innovative companies that are just starting out and to find a way to accelerate their business far beyond what they could do themselves,” notes Tej Dhawan, interim director of Iowa AgriTech Accelerator. “The Iowa AgriTech Accelerator brings together mentors and investors from a diverse group of companies and backgrounds who are willing to help a start-up’s ag tech idea take shape, grow, and become commercially viable.”

Some of the largest and well-known ag tech companies like DuPont Pioneer, Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company, Grinnell Mutual, Kent Corporation, John Deere, Peoples Company, and Sukup Manufacturing are backing the program. This group of investors will provide the class of 2017 with intensive mentoring and $40,000 in seed funding.

To complement office time, participants will also visit investor and mentor companies for a holistic education, outreach, networking, and presentation opportunities.

“Our investors and mentors hail from the ag tech industry,” says Dhawan. “Start-ups participating in our program will have opportunities to collaborate with industry leaders at their companies, present their solutions to refine product-market fit, perform customer discovery within the industry, and build strategic partnerships.”

Agreeing to be a part of the program means a start-up must commit to spending at least 80% of its time at the Iowa AgriTech Accelerator in Des Moines, Iowa. The program will run from July 10 through October 20, 2017. Participants will present at the official demo day during World Food Prize week, which will take place October 21-23, 2017. A graduation ceremony will also be held among the World Food Prize events.

Start-ups can apply online at agiowa.com/apply/. The deadline is May 12, 2017.
