Feb 16 (Reuters) - A Chinese scientist was convicted on Thursday by a federal jury in Kansas of conspiring to steal samples of a variety of genetically engineered rice seeds from a research facility, the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement.
Weiqiang Zhang, 50, a Chinese national residing in Manhattan, Kansas, was convicted on one count of conspiracy to steal trade secrets, one count of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property and one count of interstate transportation of stolen property, the department said in a statement.
BEIJING, Jan 23 (Reuters) - A rice genetically modified (GMO) by Chinese researchers to resist pests has passed safety inspections by authorities in the United States, allowing for its sale there even though Beijing continues to prohibit planting of any GMO food grain.
The rice, known as Huahui 1, was developed by a team at Huazhong University in central Hubei province to resist pests like the rice stem borer. While Chinese authorities granted the strain a safety certificate in 2009, it has never been approved for commercial production.
