Tech Tip: Know a System’s Limitations

While technology has given machines incredible abilities, trust comes in the form of knowing the limitations of a system.

“In the case of an algorithm driving a crop modeling decision, trust comes in knowing the limitations of the parameters of that algorithm,” says Joel Wipperfurth, director of e-business for WinField United.

For example, WinField United’s Field Forecasting tool uses a yield predictive model mixed in with weather information to get to the right number and what's economically feasible to apply for nitrogen.

“The model considers lots of variables, but if you recently had a hailstorm, that's outside the parameter of what the model considers,” he explains. “If phosphorous is in the single digits and it's your limiting factor and you know that agronomically, that's outside of the parameter of what the model is considering.”
